"World Cup Stolen!"

Four months before the World Cup Final in 1966 the 'cup' itself, the Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen from a rare stamp exhibition, where it was on public display.

One week later, when on a walk with his owner David Corbett, Pickles the black and white collie dog found the trophy, wrapped in newspaper, lying by the wheel of a car.

This photo shows Pickles and his owner watching the World Cup Final. When England won, Pickles was invited to the celebration banquet.

Corbett collected nearly 5,000 as a reward and used the money to buy a house. Pickles was awarded the silver medal of the National Canine Defence League.
